Diary entry, 27.07.2011, Susanne Wißhak
It was a great honor when the Austrian Minister of Science Dr. Karlheinz Töchterle visited us together with some of his cabinet members yesterday, July 26. There were also Prince Reuß, his business manager and manager of the game park, Sebastian Schmid, our sponsor Paul Cech from Royal Canin and other important press-members.
Certainly all of us were pretty nervous, and we made sure that everything looks nice and tidy – which is not easy regarding the weather and the muddy ground.
At 11 in the morning we all were lined up at the park entrance to welcome our guests and to show them around the park and our facilities. Then, our visitors could watch Rita Takacs working with Shima in the test-building through our one-way windows. In the seminar-room they got a little snack while they listened to Prof. Kotrschal talking about our work and the safety rules that have to be followed during being in contact with wolves. Dr. Töchterle actually was brave enough to enter the enclosure and our American pack greeted him excitedly. The puzzled Minister of Science even got a few kisses from Nanuk. After the pack meeting there was a short speech and the press had a lot of questions for Dr. Töchterle and Prof. Kotrschal.
Only a few hours later there already was an article about the visit on the webpage of the ministry of science and research. There one can read: “Wolf Science Center in Ernstbrunn combines scientific excellence with exemplary communication and work with young talents and therefore developed to an attractive center for research and visitors in the middle of the wine country” (http://www.bmwf.gv.at; translation SW). Needless to say that we feel very flattered by these compliments.
The ministry of science was one of our main supporters from the beginning on and allowed us to establish our project in the first place. For this we are very grateful and we hope that we convinced Dr. Töchterle yesterday, that we deserve his further support.
