After a long period of waiting, the first four dog puppies finally arrived from Hungary yesterday. We all were very excited and happy about this special event.
Since early in the morning we have been preparing a room for the dog puppies in the future WSC house. We installed a PVC-floor in the whole room, brought down tables, a couch and a mattress and went shopping. In order to get a good temperature for the puppies in this room we put on one fan heater already in the afternoon. But it turned out that this would not be enough for the coldest night in lower Austria in 15 years. The dog puppies need a temperature of at least 15°C to hold their body temperature constant, and so we put on two more fan heaters.
Thus, all was ready for the arrival of the puppies. At 7pm the pups finally arrived. After three hours' drive the puppies arrived in Ernstbrunn with Zsófi and Katrin. And of course there was a lot action when they first got out of their transport boxes... all were thrilled by the little clumsy pups. And Rafiki, Alika, Uzima and Maisha were also really happy to get out of their boxes and greeted everybody very wildly. Even Rafiki, who usually is rather shy with strangers, almost forgot his fear in the new environment. Immediately everything was inspected and sniffed. From the beginning on they felt very well in their new home and started immediately running around and playing.
From now on, we have to be care of the puppies around the clock until they are 5 months old. This includes feeding, keeping the room clean, playing, cuddling and feeding again and that 24 hours a day. The first night was Katrins, she hand-raised the puppies for several weeks in Hungary. But all other students and animal trainers at the WSC soon will have to do it as well. Although this means a lot of work and that you will be completely done after just two days in a row because of the lack of sleep and the constant tension it is also fun to take care of the little rascals. And with enough shift changes and resting periods it probably will be a pleasant experience as well.
