We are in the midst of our preparations for the arrival of our dog pups:
On Monday we fixed a barrier in the testing room, so that Bea now is able to do the apparat training inside in the future, instead of outside in the testing enclosure, where perhaps the dog pups are meant to stay once they are here. This building measure, however, caused that the wolves on Monday all performed one to two levels worse in the apparat training compared to before. It is quite interesting to see the effect of a simple change of the training location. Before the change the wolves all worked concentrated and performed quite well on the apparat whereas on Monday they were distracted by all the interesting things in the testing room and even wanted to go on straight to the touch screen room to work there – instead of doing the apparat. Fortunately this was just a short step backwards since today they were already back on the level they performed before this change. Yukon was even better than before. The stimulus of the dry food was too strong to give it back to Bea until now. However, today for the first time she managed to return the dry food consequently to Bea and to get a chick in exchange for it.
Yesterday Dr. Buchmayer, a veterinarian from Steinbach, was here to give Cherokee an vaccination, which he was still lacking, so that he could not catch a disease from the dog pups, if these would carry any disease by any chance. Dr. Buchmayer also agreed to visit us once a week in order to get the wolves used to her – also without any treatment. In this way the animals will not combine the veterinarian just with negative experiences, which obviously would make a treatment much more difficult. Thus the first step for a good long-term collaboration is done.
Welcome at the WSC Dr. Buchmayer, we are looking forward to a good collaboration in advance.
Besides that, yesterday we got a “new” couch as well as a small table. Of course we are particularly happy about that. Although we will not be able to sleep very much while looking after the pups in the night, at least we have a little comfort and a place to lie down. Thanks a lot to the sponsor at this point.
At the same time all the tests and trainings are going on as usual, which means a lot more work for all of us. Therefore we are even more happy about Julia Schulz, one of our volunteers, supporting us greatly during this week.
On Friday then we will make our puppy room winterproof, so that the pups wont be cold, and prepare everything for their arrival next Wednesday. Then it is just about waiting. Of course all are really looking forward to welcome our little rascals here in Ernstbrunn.
