Diary entry, 02.10.2011, Susanne Wißhak
On September 6th our puppy-enclosure was taken over by seven new dog pups. As usual, they are mixed breeds who come from Hungary and were taken from shelters or picked up from the streets. The first weeks they spent with our hand raisers Patricia and Balint in their home country. After eight weeks of quarantine, they finally arrived here in the beginning of September. Seven little playful furry balls who grow and gain weight on a daily basis. Their foster-parents apparently did a great job because the former malnourished pups have become quite sturdy in the meantime. It really is great fun to watch them.
At WSC dog-pups are raised like the wolves to make sure they have the same pre-conditions for the comparative studies in which they will participate. This means they are looked after all day long in the beginning. They are bottle-fed and in the night time they don´t have to sleep alone but always have human company. The current puppies are kept fence to fence with Kilio and Meru so that they can get to know the older dogs. This is important because we want them to form a pack when they are five months old.
